Each assignment will be discussed in class at the time it is introduced. You should also refer to the Assignments page for more details of these items.
RESEARCH PAPER:
Write a technical report on competing digital video technologies. Submit in electronic form saved in RTF format.
- This will be a short paper -- minimum of four to maximum of six pages. It should be a detailed discussion of the issues surrounding using computers to capture or create, edit, produce, and play digital video. You should also provide background on the need for a digital video standard, including what sponsoring entities might exist to establish and promote a universal standard.
ASSIGNMENT #1:
Create a video presentation on a single event in your life
- Alternately, you may choose to tell about someone important to you, a famous person, or an important historical event. The event can use still images only. The presentation should include information about the circumstance surrounding the chosen event. Your presentation should be a minimum of two minutes in length, but no longer than five minutes long. Export the project with a video frame size of 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high at 15 frames per second. Export the project in MPEG-4 format.
ASSIGNMENT #2:
Develop a preview for a fake movie
- Shoot and capture short video footage that you take (also using still images, if desired) to create a preview for a fake movie of your choice. Make the frame size 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high at 30 frames per second, again saved in MPEG-4 format. The length of the preview must be between one and three minutes long.
ASSIGNMENT #3:
Create a 30-second station identification or PSA for CEC-TV
- This will be a promotional piece for the college TV Station. As you edit your work, the finished video must be exactly 30-seconds (SMPTE 0:00:29:29) in length -- NO EXCEPTIONS. This project will be edited in broadcast quality (720 by 480 frame size, 29.97 frames per second) and be output to video tape. Also submit a QuickTime version (with the same specifications, using the DV codec) to a designated folder on the Stargate server.
ASSIGNMENT #4:
Make a DVD version of a one-hour TV show, sitcom, or drama
- Record an episode of your favorite TV show in DV format, remove the commericals, and then make a DVD of it. The TV show should be a full one-hour before the commericals are removed. After capturing and editing the video footage, adding chapter markers as needed for the DVD menus, then export it for use in the DVD authoring software.
ASSIGNMENT #5:
Create a documentary on DVD about a worthy topic of your choice
- A documentary will involve a combination of original footage and on-camera interview(s) with relevant persons or community leaders. Minimum length is 10 minutes, maximum length is 30 minutes. This project will be edited in broadcast quality and submitted on a DVD medium. The DVD menus must be designed by the group and use original artwork. Packaging, also with original artwork, is expected.
MID-TERM TEST:
The mid-term test is at the Campus Testing Center
- The mid-term test can be taken anytime during week eight (8). It must be completed by the Testing Center's closing time on Saturday. Remember to bring a photo ID and a 100-question (green ink) ScanTron card with you.

FINAL TEST:
The test will be at the designated time published in the semester schedule
- Study these possible questions as a guide on what information you should know for the written final. Bring a standard 100-question ScanTron card (green ink). You cannot take the written final without it. (...Nor can you take the test at other than the designated time without prior arrangement.)
