VT 1400 Introduction to Internet Development
All assignments, projects, and tests are due on the date designated by the instructor. There will be 6 assignments (60 points), one major project (50 points) and peer evaluation (5 points), one midterm (100 points) and one final exam (100 points). Here are the assignments for VT 1400 - Introduction to Internet Development:
Assignment One
This assignment has two parts. Part One discusses web standards and why they are important. Part Two discusses Internet exploration.
Part ONE
1) Email the instructor a paragraph or two (more if you wish) that answers the following questions:
a) In brief, what are web standards?
b) Why are they important?
NOTE: this should be a summary written by YOU. Read it. Process it. Digest it. Then write your thoughts about standards and their importance.
Part TWO
Internet Exploration (assignment to be uploaded to your account on the server) - In this assignment the student will search the Internet and identify 10 (separate) well done examples of text (or typography), video (quicktime or realvideo), sound (audio files), graphics (gif or jpeg), animation (animated gif or shockwave), or other multimedia effect (meaning just about anything unique, different, or cutting edge). Copy the URL of the site and type an explanation to indicate what type of multimedia (eg text, graphics, etc) makes the site noteworthy. Describe why you liked and what you did not like. Describe their use of media and what message was sent or communicated to you. NOTES: You may want to create a folder called a1 and place the index.php file inside that folder.
Assignment Two
Hyper Text Markup Language (or HTML) Basic Home Page - In this assignment the student will create a basic home page with student selected information (meaning whatever you would like to present). The page must include the following elements: (a) 10 graphics (some gif and some jpg), (b) 10 links to pages external, (c) an interface on each page that links to a minumum of 7 internal pages with at least two subdirectory levels (the interface needs to be on every page and the subdirectory folders should have elements at least two subdirectories deep), and (d) one (1) paragraph of content (text or something) on each page. The assignment should be uploaded to the student server account and displayed in the browser live and online.
Assignment Three
Tables, Tables, Tables - In this assignment the student will create nine different table structures using html (yes, 9 in all). Tables are one method of controlling the layout and structure of web pages. The table structures will be presented in class. Click here for an illustration of the tables. This assignment will need the following elements (a) an interface linking all nine tables (b) a link, graphic, or background color in each of the table cells, (c) the assignment must be uploaded to the student's server account, and (d) the tables should be visually pleasing.
Assignment Four
CSS - In this assignment the student will use CSS to manage style elements including (a) type, (b) size, (c) color, and (d) other stylistic elements on a web site (at least eight web pages connected through an interface).
Assignment Five
Web Site Evaluations - In this assignment the student will conduct a web site evaluation (Using the form provided) for 5-8 different Web sites. Please include a narrative (one to two paragraphs) summarizing your Web site evaluation. (We will have a few random, in-class presentations on this assignment)
Assignment Six
Deconstructing/Reconstructing a Web Site - In this assignment the student will review and copy the source HTML code and graphics of four Web sites home pages. The student can select one of the home pages and develop a second page to deconstruct on the site creating a second level to the deconstruction. Deconstruct/Reconstruct the Web site so it will run from a Zip Disk or usb drive, etc. One of the web sites we will be deconstructing this semester is yet to be determined.
Assignment Seven
Simple Web Site - Personal Home Page (If you already have a personal web site talk to the instructor) In this assignment the student will create and structure a ten (10-12 or more actually) page web site. The student will gather content (both graphic elments and text), write the html, create the organizational structure, and present the site to the class.

Take great notes during class and you can be well prepared for the midterm.
Assignment Eight
Working as a Member of a Team in a Web Development Project - In this assignment the student(s) will brainstorm, plan, organize, gather, create and present a web site (with 2 people). The student(s) will work cooperatively with the other members of the group. The type of web site will be decided by the group. Your grade will be determined by the instructors Web site evaluation of your groups presentation. Click here for tips on creating the site. Assignment Eight - continued
Storyboard and Gather Content - In this assignment the students who are members of a team will storyboard and gather content for their teams Web site. Each member of the team (each student) must be involved in this process. Storyboarding is the detailed flow chart or diagram of a web site and includes details such as graphics that will appear on each page of a web site, text that will appear on each page of a web site, and other content for the web site (This means that the details of each page of the site needs to be worked through). Gathering content is acquisition of photographs, text, descriptions, graphics, logos, maps, and other information. Essentially this is the process of brainstorming the purpose of the site, how the site will work and flow, as well as gathering the media resources and organizing the site in a systematic way.

Create a Graphic - In this part of the assignment the student will create a simple graphic using Adobe Photoshop. The graphic will be used as part of the team project (meaning each student will create a simple graphic for the project you are working on together as a team).

Use PHP includes (include_once, require, include, require_once) to build the web project's interface.

Each student will show a new html or advanced web development technique to the instructor prior to the class presentions of assignment number 7. In this the student will implement some new or advanced html, graphics, or web site technique (such as advanced html, javascript, css, client side imagemapping, forms, lists, bullets, or other etc.) in the web site. What you choose to use will depend on the requirements of the web site you are building.
