IT 3100 Systems Design and Administration I
Email (Remote Reading)

Due : October 9, 2009

Assignment: 
Install and configure the services to allow remote reading of email.

Requirements: 

  • Configure the system for remote email reading.
  • Configure remote email reading clients (MUA).

Configure the system for remote email reading: 

  • Configure the uw-imapd software to provide IMAP remote mail reading.
  • Only allow connections to IMAP through the encrypted port.

Configure remote email reading clients (MUA): 

  • Configure Outlook or Outlook Express for reading and sending email with your system.
  • Configure Evolution for reading and sending email with your system.

Pass-off Procedure: 

  • Using the CIT submission system, submit three files to IT3100, SMTP Remote Read.
  • One file is a screen capture of Outlook reading email on your system.
  • One file is a screen capture of Evolution reading email on your system.
  • The other file should be named smtp_info.txt. This file must be a plain text file, with the following format:
    mta: ip_address_of_MTA
    user: user_name_created_for_passoff
    pass: password_for_user
    host: name.of.mta.machine
    domain: name.of.domain
    
    For example, a file may look like this:
    mta: 144.38.212.50
    user: bonzai
    pass: $&^bbi13
    host: mail.horgoth.com
    domain: horgoth.com
    
  • Several email messages will be sent to the user at the MTA.
  • Several email messages will be sent from the user at the MTA.
  • Email messages that are not correctly delivered will cause points to be deducted from the assignment.
  • Email will be read from a remote MUA.
  • The submitted screen captures will be examined.
