Russ was first introduced to computer programming at the age of 10, and he has been a student of computer science ever since. A native of southern Utah, Russ graduated from Pine View High School in 1995. He moved to Massachusetts to attend Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude in Computer Science in 2001. He worked as a software engineer in the Boston area before moving to England, where he received a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge in 2007.

Russ lives in Diamond Valley with his wife, Nancy, and their two daughters.
